President’s WelcomeA Message From the President
Dear Alumnae/i and Friends of Maria College, In my more than 31 years as President of Maria, I have seen a lot of changes—in the College, in the community, in the world. But one thing that hasn’t changed is the mission we live by at Maria, day by day: academic excellence and service to the community. It is at the center of everything we do. Our curriculum is grounded in the humanities, seeking to instill respect and dignity for every individual, while transforming learned skills into caring service. We have always and will continue to deliver our programs through high academic standards, in convenient scheduling formats, for students of any age. Our student population is rich with diversity, and that’s something we’re proud of. Maria’s students are the backbone of our small school, the cornerstone of our close-knit community. Many of our students have become an integral part of Maria’s visibility within the greater community, and we are so proud of their accomplishments. We continue to strive to prepare students to be well-rounded, empowered individuals who support human dignity and carry out Maria’s mission of service to others. I, too, am a graduate of Maria College and admit that there are days where I learn more from our students than they from me! I believe we all have the power to make a difference in the world. When a student leaves Maria, he or she leaves with a stronger sense of self, as well as with an understanding of how high academic standards can be achieved by anyone with commitment and heart. At Maria, we give our students confidence academically, and the personal attention that they receive here is reflected in their everyday life. Our doors are always open: whether it’s talking about what help a student needs or what is going on in his or her life. When students graduate from Maria, I often hear the same message: they have been somehow transformed by their time here. In my years of service as President of Maria, I haven’t met a student who didn’t aspire to become a better person in the service of others. I think it’s the human connection component that makes us special, and I think we help shape people to become more than just their academic degree. I see a strong future for Maria College, and a strong future for our students. As we continue to add new programs and keep pace with the marketplace, I am sure we will continue to grow more than I can even fathom. We recently celebrated our 50th anniversary so, of course, I am looking forward, dreaming about the next 50 years, and it is looking good! I find comfort in our small and unique college community, and hope that our students do as well. Faithfully,
Sister Laureen A. Fitzgerald, RSM
