OTA Program Outcomes

The 2009, 2010, 2011 three-year aggregate pass rate for the new graduates*/first-time takers of the NBCOT professional certification examination is 84%.  During that three-year time period, the program had 47 graduates; 25 took the exam with 21 passing on their first attempt. Prior to 2012, the OTA was not required to pass the exam to practice in New York State. As of February 2012, the OTA IS required to pass the NBCOT exam in order to practice as a COTA in New York State.

*New graduates are those taking the exam within one year of graduation date.

Recently, the U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics (www.bls.gov/oco/ocos166) indicated the need for qualified occupational therapy assistants is expected to grow much faster than average, by approximately 25 percent through 2016.  The majority of occupational therapy jobs are found in hospitals, nursing homes, residential care facilities, rehabilitation and psychiatric centers, and a wide range of public, private and special schools.  Other positions  are found in community care and family service agencies.
