Maria College – Tobacco Free Campus!

posted Thursday, September 15, 2011 at 2:31pm

Maria College attended the NYS Tobacco-Free College Conference this year sponsored by the American Cancer Society. Tobacco dependence and exposure to secondhand smoke is the number one cause of cancer deaths each year. Almost one third of all cancer deaths are attributed to toobacco and they are completely preventable cancers. In New York State, about one in five young people between 18 and 24 smoke (NYSDOH 2009).

A tobacco-free campus policy, (including no sale, not industry sponsorship of activities, or use of tobacco products anywhere on campus) is beneficial for many reasons. Colleges,  like Maria, that show leadership now will be part of and early adopter group that receives a trememdous amount of positive public relations and support. This effort is about saving lives and preventing unnecessary illness, suffering and premature deaths among the campus community.
