Please join us in honoring the memory of the co-founder of the Maria College Nursing Program
Esther K. McEvoy, MS, RN
December 6, 1928 – December 11, 2017
Esther was a 1949 graduate of the St. Peter’s Hospital School of Nursing and received a bachelor of science from Russell Sage College in 1956 and a master of science in 1969. In 1968, Esther McEvoy helped the Sisters of Mercy pass the torch and transition the St. Peter’s Hospital School of Nursing to an associate degree in nursing program at Maria College, integrating nursing education with a liberal arts and sciences curriculum. She set standards for excellence and student achievement that remain evident today. Her tenure at Maria spanned 40 years, and she influenced generations of students throughout the Capital Region from her time at St. Peter’s Hospital and Maria College.
Esther retired as chairperson of the Maria Nursing Department in 2003 and remained teaching pharmacology until 2008. She is distinguished with professor emerita status. We remember her dedication, her ability to listen and always see the student as a person, her willingness to share her expertise with colleagues and students, and to help others keep in the forefront a vision for the nursing profession.
Her transformational leadership ensured nursing graduates had the knowledge and skills to meet the demands of their profession, which directly helped patients to achieve better outcomes. She inspired others to a higher level of motivation, and her work ethic and love of nursing helped to develop a competent and compassionate nursing workforce in our region.
The Esther McEvoy, RN Endowed Scholarship will exist in perpetuity and pays tribute to an extraordinary and dedicated educator who was an important part of the Maria College fabric. Esther impacted thousands of students who, through excellent work and commitment, are carrying on her amazing legacy today. This scholarship will help us to keep a Maria College nursing degree within financial reach for generations of students . Your gift of any amount will make a difference to help keep Esther’s spirit alive.
“By endowing this scholarship in Esther McEvoy’s memory, we hope to give the same opportunity to deserving students who want to serve their communities by helping others.”
