Maria College Board of Trustees Extends President Gamble’s term

Press Release

ALBANY, NY—Gail Waring ’63, RSM and Chair of the Maria College Board of Trustees has announced that Dr. Tom Gamble, Maria College interim president, has accepted the board’s invitation to extend his presidency indefinitely.

“The Maria Board of Trustees is very pleased with the tremendous progress that Dr. Gamble has made in the last ten months, Waring stated.  He has led Maria in accordance with the spirit, mission, and heritage of the Sisters of Mercy and brought new energy and leadership into the Maria community.  We feel that it is critical that this momentum continue as we look ahead to the 2017-18 academic year.  On the horizon, we have two very important institutional review processes to be conducted by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE) and the Conference for Mercy Higher Education (CMHE).  Dr. Gamble’s wisdom and experience will be instrumental in successfully guiding Maria through these reviews.  The insights gained in this process will also be valuable to inform the board when we decide to resume the search for a permanent president.  We are grateful that Dr. Gamble has accepted our invitation to continue to lead Maria.”

He came to Maria after a decade of distinguished service as the president of Mercyhurst University in Erie, Pennsylvania.  When accepting the board’s invitation to extend his presidency indefinitely Gamble stated, “When I joined the Maria community in April 2016, I found an institution and a community of people dedicated to providing educational opportunity to those who might not otherwise have that chance.  As a community, Maria believes that education is the best means for individuals and families to improve their lives and that all who can benefit from it deserve that opportunity.  When educational opportunities are rooted in the spiritual foundation found in the Mercy charism, a powerful and unique entity is created. I have developed a deep regard for the value of Maria College and I’m very pleased to continue at the helm of this wonderful institution. We have made good progress, but there is much work yet to be done. Now we can roll up our sleeves and get back to work advancing our strategic initiatives without the immediate distraction of a presidential search.”
