Maria College announces Colleen Carmody as Dean of Nursing
Experienced nursing educator brings leadership during College’s growth

Colleen Carmody headshotAlbany, NY — Maria College proudly announces the appointment of Colleen Carmody, EdD, RN, CNS, as its Dean of Nursing at a time where the College’s nursing programs are experiencing continued strength and growth.

With some of the highest NCLEX pass rates in the state, coupled with current accreditations, the Maria College nursing program is the largest producer of nursing graduates in the area. The College offers a Practical Nursing Certificate program, an Associate in Applied Science in Nursing and an RN-BS Degree in Nursing completion program. Most recently, the College announced the launch of the fully online RN-BS Degree in Nursing Completion Program. Maria is home to some of the most technologically advanced clinical simulation laboratories and experienced faculty in the region.

Dr. Carmody comes to Maria College with decades of nursing education experience, both in the classroom and in a clinical setting. Most recently she served as the Senior Associate Dean of Nursing at St. John’s University in Queens, NY where she established a 4-year undergraduate pre-licensure nursing program.

She has further demonstrated success as a leader and educator through such projects as the transitioning to online teaching for the RN to BS Program at St. Francis College, and served as the Director of Nursing Simulation at Nazareth College where she planned, implemented and evaluated simulation-based learning experiences.

As a practicing nurse, she helped build a pediatric clinic where she became clinical director of the practice, and spent 13 years as an active duty nurse and four years as a reserve nurse in the United States Air Force Nurse Corps.

“I am delighted to join Maria College as the Dean of Nursing as I have been admiring the College’s nursing department for some time now,” said Dr. Carmody. “Maria’s programs and mission align with my experience and values, and I look forward to helping guide the next generation of nurse leaders who will shape future healthcare delivery.”

“Dr. Carmody comes to Maria College at a pivotal moment where we are expanding programs, including the offering of the all-online RN-BS Nursing Completion Program, and the expansion of virtual reality within our ever-growing simulation technologies,” said Maria College Vice President of Academic Affairs Anne Jung, PhD. “Her experience in these areas will serve as an invaluable asset to our students and faculty as we continue to seek ways to further provide learning opportunities in the field of nursing.”

“Dr. Carmody has demonstrated her clear ability to be a regional leader in nursing education which will help to strategically advance Maria College,” said Maria College President Lynn Ortale, PhD. “We look forward to her leadership as she helps us plan new program opportunities, and partnerships within the healthcare community in the Albany area and beyond. Her career experiences working for Catholic faith-based institutions illustrate her commitment to providing high-quality, values-led curriculum and experiences to all Maria nursing students.”

Dr. Carmody was selected following a comprehensive national search through consulting firm Academic Search. With input from faculty, staff and students, the committee developed a leadership profile comprised of characteristics and traits that would help lead the department forward.

Dr. Carmody will begin her role on August 15, 2022.
