I am very sorry to share with you that Sister Laureen Fitzgerald, RSM, Maria College class of 1961 and President Emerita, died yesterday evening following a long illness. Sr. Laureen led Maria College as President from 1977 – 2012, and was instrumental in creating the institution we are today. Every part of our campus was blessed by her vision and her presence, and she left an indelible mark on our lives. Sr. Laureen passed into eternal life on November 11th, the anniversary date of the death of Catherine McAuley, founder of the Sisters of Mercy. This day is honored by the Sisters of Mercy throughout the world as Remembrance Day.
Sr. Gail Waring, RSM, Chair of Maria College’s Board, said, “Sister Laureen, our beloved Sister of Mercy, dedicated her life to education, especially for women, at Maria College. We celebrate her new life in the fullness of God, confident of her continuing love for our College.”
