Alumni Spotlight: May 2017
What led you to Maria College?
I grew up in a small town. There were only about 250 students in my high school graduating class. I knew I wanted to relocate to a larger city for college, but I also knew I wanted to be on a small campus and in classrooms where there weren’t too many other students. I could see that the small class sizes would be beneficial. Maria College was perfect for me!
What do you remember most vividly about your time at Maria College?
All of the kind and welcoming staff, professors and students.
Did you have a favorite teacher/professor?
There is a tie for first place. Father Hogan and Sharon Hope. They always had huge, welcoming smiles and were both interesting to listen to and I could tell that they both had a love for teaching.
How did Maria prepare you for your next step?
Maria taught me all the basic principles that I needed to discover my passion for Business Management. The curriculum included classes in Business Organization and Management, Financial and Managerial Accounting, Business Law, Economics, Marketing and Human Resource Management. Most importantly Maria College taught me about leadership, decision-making and teamwork. The course work in addition to these strong business skills provided the foundation that I needed to be extremely successful in the field of Business Management.
What would you consider your greatest professional accomplishment?
While in my position as Director of Communications at BSNENY I was tasked with taking over the fundraising efforts for the American Heart Association. Under my leadership 170 employees participated and we raised over $10,000.00, more than quadrupling the previous year’s effort of 28 participants and $2,500.00 raised.
What piece of advice would you give to current Maria students?
Follow your dreams, and never give up. Ask for help when you need it. Don’t ever let anyone discourage you. There are so many opportunities available to you if you work hard.
