Alani Robinson on Opportunity Programs

  1. State your name, major and expected graduation date.
My name is Alani Robinson and I’m currently enrolled in the Health and Occupational Science Program (HOS) majoring in Occupational Therapy and I am expected to graduate in 2021.
  1. What lead you to Maria College?
Initially, I chose Maria College because of its well-known reputation regarding the nursing program. I was also pleased with the idea of obtaining my education at a school with a smaller population size, in order to have more 1:1 and frequent access to my professors.
  1. How did you find out about the OP program here at Maria College?
I found out about the OP program at my high school during Maria’s instant admit day. I met with two advisors from the program and they gave me an interview, along with the run-down of what OP is and its benefits. The energy that the advisors had about the program really inspired me to seriously pursue my higher education.
  1. How has the OP Program and Staff helped you in pursuing your academic goals?
The OP program and staff has helped me develop greatly as an individual and a scholar. The program has allowed for me to be introduced to consistent studying habits, networking skills, and ways of professionalism, that have greatly improved my performance in classes and in my current job. In addition, the program allows for me to attend school without the financial stress that comes with higher education. Similarly, the staff has allowed for me to have a safe place to express any stress or troubles I’m experiencing, and just guidance in general.
          • What kind of opportunities have you had through this program?
OP has allowed for me to set an example for my younger siblings, that life is what you make it and there are resources out there to help you achieve your goals. The program has brought me many opportunities to meet individuals that have significant meaning in our community, such as congressmen or senators; which has allowed for me to become knowledgeable about things going on in the program, world, etc.
          • Tell us about your experience in the program.
So far, my experience has been great. I get a different college experience than most due to my access of resources. For example, from my first semester I was introduced to tutors and facts and statistics on studying that have helped me to this day. It’s the little things like that, which allow for students to be a little less stressed and more prepared.
  1. How do you feel Maria has prepared you for your future career?
Maria has helped me prepare for my career by providing me with information and then giving me a space to practice and experience it before I start my career officially.
