There is so much to celebrate in the month of May from the completion of the spring academic semester to our mothers on Mother’s Day to the city of Albany’s heritage with the Tulip Festival. And May is the month in which we get to celebrate nurses and future nurses!!!
May 6 to May 12 has been designated, National Nurses Week. Click here to check out the history of this week. And, during that week, May 8 has been designated as National Student Nurses Day to celebrate those who are studying to be future nurses here at Maria College and nationwide.
If you or your loved ones have been under the care of a nurse, you know that they are the heart and soul of healthcare.
Maria College’s graduating nursing students pledge to offer caring service to others with the International Council of Nurses’ Pledge that includes the words: In full knowledge of the obligations I am undertaking, I promise to care for the sick, with all the skills and understanding I possess, without regard to race, creed, color, politics or social status, sparing no effort to conserve life, to alleviate suffering, and to promote health.
Since Maria College’s Nursing Program prepares men and women to be the nurses of tomorrow, I asked some of the Maria College nursing faculty to share their words of wisdom for future nurses.
Describe the core characteristic that nurses should have:
Answer: character, caring, and compassion.
Offer one piece of advice for future nurses:
Answer: Keep a journal, once you begin to practice you will learn more from reflection than from a book. Someday you will want to write a book and share your experiences with the next generation. Do for others what they cannot do for themselves. Take care of yourself to take care of others.
We are so fortunate to have such terrific nurse educators as part of the Maria College community! They are very passionate in preparing men and women to become our future nursing professionals.
Celebrate National Nurses Week, and keep the gratitude we all have for nurses in your hearts all year long!
