Remember Our Roots

What a busy time of year this is!

We just celebrated the joyful Easter holiday this Sunday, March 27, 2016! Spring officially arrived as of Sunday, March 20, 2016, at 12:30am! And we have just passed the celebration of everything Irish on Saint Patrick’s Day on Thursday, March 17.

Maria College, itself, has a strong Irish connection—Sister Catherine McAuley, from Dublin, Ireland, founded the religious order of the Sisters of Mercy in 1831. Then, in 1843, the first group of Sisters of Mercy came to the United States. READ MORE about the fascinating life story of Catherine McAuley.

In Albany, NY, the Sisters of Mercy opened Maria College in 1958 to educate the sisters, and then, in 1965, the College was opened to the public. Today, Maria College is sponsored by the national Conference for Mercy Higher Education network while continuing to be guided by Sister Catherine McAuley’s dedication to mercy, education, health care, helping the poor, and social justice.

In celebration of Sister Catherine McAuley, a group of faculty, students, friends, and family traveled to Ireland during the summer of 2014, visiting the special places associated with Sister McAuley. So, enjoy the brighter, warmer days of the spring season, and keep in touch.
